Around 1900–1930, postcards were essentially the Instagram of their time. Publishers in Germany and the US churned out endless whimsical designs, and anthropomorphic hearts became a staple of Valentine and “love token” imagery. They were often flirtatious, slightly cheeky, or faintly melodramatic, exactly like this one.
